Dog Training DVD

When I first got my West Highland Terrier pup it completely turned my world upside down. I have to admit I honestly thought I’d made a mistake at first it just seemed like so much work! Part of the problem was that because he didn’t get all his shots right away he was stick at home and couldn’t go out. That meant I was stuck in with him too! I figured that since we were both stuck in together I’d try to find a way to put this time to good use. I thought I’d start a little training with him. The only problem with that idea was that I wasn’t sure how. It is my first puppy and I know the training they need is a little different to a dog who is a bit older. I had a look online and decided to buy some dog training DVD’s from one of the many excellent DVD retailers you’ll find online.

Dog DVD Training

You’ll find lots of different types of dog training DVD’s online now as I guess there’s so many people like me out there. Stuck in with a puppy who can’t go out and is in great need of a little training and discipline. I opted for a DVD specifically designed for puppies as I knew it wouldn’t be too exhausting for him and for me! It was a nice way to break him into training and giving him a little discipline. It covered the basics like how to sit which he picked up in no time. I think that’s because he’s so obsessed with food he knew if he did it he’d get a little treat. Trying to get him to stay was a little more difficult because as soon as he saw the treat I had for him he’d run over to my legs trying to get some of it. The DVD reinforced that I had to stay firm with my pet and not give in to his demands. Even if he’s crying and jumping up to get some you have to stay strong and only give the treat when the dog has done what you have asked. If you’re too soft with the puppy you’ll never get anywhere!

Dog Obedience Training DVD

I found the dog training DVD I bought to be a great start to training my dog. I found that when I eventually took him outside he went a bit wild as there was so many distractions. The DVD did mention that you should try some of the training routines outside in an enclosed area. Your dog has to get used to things happening around him and you have to train him not to pay attention to them. I seem to have picked one of the hardest breeds to train though as terriers and notoriously stubborn! I will just have to stay strong and stick to my guns though, even when he is crying and looking up into my face for a snack. On the plus side my puppy is obsessed with food which makes the more basic commands a little easier to convey to him. I can only imagine how hard it is to train a terrier who’s not obsessed with food!
