How To Become A Locksmith Training And Career

At one time or another everyone has sighed in frustration at the moment they realize they have locked themselves out of either their house or car. Have you ever thought to yourself maybe I could become a locksmith and save myself a whole lot of trouble and money? So the real question is how to become a locksmith?

Locksmithing is a professional qualification that must be gained in the right way in order to perform the duties of a locksmith legally. Believe it or not you need a special locksmith license before you can begin your training, training an apprentice, or operating your own locksmithing business. These different licenses are under different categories such as training license, teacher license, master license, and apprentice license. Each of these licenses will require a fee and information that you will have to show in order to obtain the license. For example, for a teacher license they may ask for a copy of your locksmith license, a degree or certification, and proof that you run a successful locksmith business.

Of course when you decide you want to train as a locksmith, after obtaining a license, you can begin your locksmith education by taking courses at college or find a locksmith with an apprentice license who can teach you. Obviously this choice depends on how much money you have to spend and how quickly you want to begin. Just keep in mind that if you choose to become an apprentice it may take as long as 3-4 years to complete your training and become qualified.

There are numerous books and DVDs available to purchase online that can help you sharpen your locksmith skills while your are still learning. DVDs such as those by MLSES cover a specific area for example domestic locks for each disc. These are handy to have even after you finish your training and begin practicing as a locksmith just in case you run into a situation you have never tried before. There are also books online that can contain practice test and study materials to use before taking the actual locksmith test.

In addition to how to become a locksmith, you may ask yourself what sort of locksmith do I want to become? You may want to work in a store where customers come to you and include duties such as key cutting. Another option is to become an on call locksmith. An on call locksmith will most likely be opening locked houses or vehicles. You may also be installing new locks for people. An important business for people if you don’t mind working outside the normal 9-5 hours is 24/7 locksmiths. These locksmiths are available for a call out any time or any day. The benefit of this is that you will make a good amount of money for these call outs for a limited amount of time if you are a good locksmith.

Most people do not know that security systems and vaults are also included in the list of skills learned as a locksmith. So for a locksmith that is mobile call outs could be to install a security system or vault.

An interesting offshoot of the locksmith profession is a forensic locksmith. In this case you would be working to determine whether or not locks or security systems have genuinely been damaged in an act such as robbery. For example, if a couple call their insurance company to say they have been robbed, they had armed the security system, but still the burglars stole their valuables, a forensic locksmith will come in to make sure that the security system was indeed armed and not just damaged by the homeowners to make it look like a robbery. The conclusion of a locksmith’s findings will determine whether the insurance company will pay out or not. In more high profile cases for the police a forensic locksmith may be called at an expert witness in a court case.

As I stated before you will learn a multitude of skills in either locksmith training or apprenticing. Therefore, if you wish you could focus on a single skill and steer your career in that direction. You could focus solely on vehicles, safes or vaults, or becoming a master key maker.

When considering how to become a locksmith you must also consider many different careers paths. Becoming a locksmith requires a lot of training and dedication. The great thing about becoming a locksmith is that people always need one, as long as there are locks there will always be people to lock themselves out!
