Picking Up Your Puppy And The Trip Home

Getting a new puppy can be exciting for any new owner, however if this is the first time you have owned a puppy then you may need a few tips on dealing with a puppy first night home and puppy care. Obviously when you purchase a new puppy it should be at least 8 weeks old and completely weaned off the mother. Although the puppy has been weaned he will still feel a bit of separation anxiety being in a strange new place away from its mother and siblings. Whimpering and some crying will probably occur with the new puppy and you may be up and down the first night. It is important that you understand this before your new puppy comes home and to always be patient and never yell or hit the puppy. If you do so the puppy will become scared and nervous in the new environment and will never adjust properly. It can be a good idea to read books on puppy care before you new puppy gets home. If you require a bit more information on puppy care there are loads of books available online.

Before Bedtime

It is important that before the puppy goes to bed it is taken outside so it has a chance to go to the bathroom before bedtime. At bedtime make sure there is no food or water left in the room to prevent any accidents from puppy.

While sleep is very important to any puppy and it is vital that they take naps, a nap too close to bedtime could be a bad idea. You may want to engage the puppy in play for a bit before bedtime to help tire them out.

Sleeping Arrangements And Aids To Help Your Puppy Sleep

Fear not, here are some rules for puppy first night home. For puppy’s first night let him sleep in the same room with you. Now there’s no need for the puppy to be in your bed, he should have a little bed of his own in the room. Also, in order to help the puppy get used to you as someone it can trust and its leader you should leave a piece of clothing in the puppy’s new bed. Preferably the shirt you were wearing that day would be the best since it will have the strongest scent. This will help both you and the puppy to bond.

Stuffed animals work well as a bit of reassurance for the puppy. The puppy will happily snuggle up to a stuffed animal that is a little bigger than they are and he will feel like he is back in the litter. Another lesser known tip for your puppy’s first night at home is an alarm clock. It is important that the alarm clock is a wind up or battery operated clock that makes the ticking noise, not a digital. Now, I know you may be thinking why does a puppy need an alarm has he got an appointment the next day? The reason behind the alarm clock is simple; the ticking of the clock offers the puppy a bit of security by reminding him of the sound of either its mother or siblings heartbeat when it would lie close to them to sleep. A great all in one toy for your puppy is the Brown Mutt Snuggle Puppy. This product includes a warm pack that you can heat up in the microwave, a stuffed animals, and a heartbeat replicator inside the toy which just requires a battery. This toy covers all the bases to help you puppy have a peaceful first night.

Crying Or Whimpering

If during the night you still hear crying or whimpering from your puppy then you can go over to the its bed and give it a pet. Puppy may just be craving a little attention and should settle down after the petting. If the puppy won’t settle then you may have to determine if your puppy may need to make another bathroom trip outside.

Night Over Now Training Begins

As I said before puppy care is relatively simple. A few simple items like a stuffed animal, piece of your clothing, and alarm clock can help your puppy first night home go much more smoothly. Of course a bit of patience, time, and care will be repaid tenfold by your new puppy. Now that you and your puppy have survived the first night, bonded, and learned each others little quirks now the real fun begins, training your puppy! Don't be afraid to jump right into training because the sooner your puppy has a routine and structure it will be a much happier puppy.
