Travel Insurance For Over 65 Travelers

When many people think of traveling around the world the most common image that comes to mind is a young person that is taking a gap year to see the world before returning to college however, that is not the case you may be surprised to learn that the over 65's, aka senior citizens, make up a large majority of world travelers. It makes perfect sense they are at the same position to any student taking a gap year, except they have more money to do it! Senior citizens have worked some 30 odd years, most likely have retired and want to spend that hard earned cash on something new and different where they can spend time with friends and family and create great memories. As I just mentioned over 65 travelers will usually be retired and therefore they have plenty of time to travel, they do not need to stick to a one week vacation. This indefinite amount of time traveling makes it all the more important for senior citizens to purchase travel insurance for over 65 travelers. For any traveler, but especially senior citizens, travel insurance for over 65 is just as important if not more so to making sure your passport is up to date, suitcases packed, and money exchanged.

What Should Be Included In Your Policy

Now many travelers want to know what should be included in their travel insurance policy. There are several factors that are key to choosing the right policy based on your travel plans. Of course the most obvious thing to check is if your travel insurance covers the country or countries that you will be traveling to. If you are a frequent traveler or plan to travel for more than 28 consecutive days then it is best to purchase an annual travel insurance policy. This will cover you for one year from the start date you choose. When choosing a start date for your policy many people make the mistake of choosing either the day before or the day that they are planning to travel. This mistake can cost you a lot of money so what you want to do is choose the start date as the same day you are actually purchasing the policy. This may sound wasteful if your vacation is not scheduled for a month after you are purchasing your policy, but there is a method to my madness. For example, your vacation will start in July 1st and you are purchasing your travel insurance for over 65 June 1st, and then during the course of the June the airline you are flying with goes bust. If your travel insurance was not active in the time period when the airline went bust then you are out of luck and out of pocket! So that is why I recommend your start date as the day you purchase your travel insurance policy. It is also of the utmost importance that you confirm that your over 65 travel insurance offers cover if the airline goes bust. With the economic crisis this year many travelers found out the hard way that their insurance policy did not cover dissolution of an airline company. Your travel insurance policy should also offer compensation if the flights are delayed or canceled.
As well as flights you want to make sure that your travel insurance for over 65 covers any mode of transportation that you will be using while on holiday. So it important to look at your travel itinerary and work out if you will be traveling by trains, buses, cars, boat, etc. and make sure that is covered in your policy.

Acts Of God Natural Disaster Coverage

Acts of God and natural disasters have been a controversial topic in the news as of late. Who could have predicted that the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland that hasn't seen any activity since 1918 would suddenly erupt and cause havoc all over the world leaving airports closed and millions of travelers stranded. This has been a lesson to all travelers to read the fine print of their travel insurance policies and perhaps take it a step further and specifically choose policies that cover acts of God and natural disasters. I would say such policies are especially important for senior citizen travelers to consider when researching travel insurance for over 65's. A person 65 or over does not want to be worried that if they are harmed by a natural disaster such as an earthquake or tsunami that they will have to pay out of their own pocket to be treated because their travel insurance will not cover it. Also, if your policy covers acts of God and natural disasters then you are eligible to make a claim for any extra accommodation or travel costs you have incurred.

Medical And Death Coverage

Speaking of medical coverage this is one of the most important elements of choosing a travel insurance for over 65. You want to make sure that the policy coverage is a suitable amount if anything where to ever occur and you needed medical attention. I would recommend that any policy offer a minimum of $50,000 medical coverage. If you are considering partaking in activities such as canoeing, kayaking, skiing, etc. then you need to purchase additional coverage in addition to your over 65 travel insurance. These activities are considered high risk and that is why often travel insurance companies will offer extra coverage for these activities in addition to the standard policy. Many people think that they are Superman and nothing will ever happen to them on holiday, but do not forget that dental emergencies are covered in a travel insurance policy. You could be eating a lovely meal in a restaurant and unexpectedly a filling comes loose, or you chip a tooth. No one can predict these situations, but I can tell you that if you have a toothache for the rest of your holiday it will not be very pleasant! Once again coverage amounts differ from policy to policy and you will have to choose the one that you feel best reflects your needs.

Not to be morbid, but while on the subject of medical coverage another vital part of an travel insurance policy is to check out the coverage of death and dismemberment. If something where to happen that a traveler would pass away while on holiday, there are costs that would be incurred to ship the body back home. If your travel insurance policy covers this then the company will pay for the costs of shipping the body back home or for the cost of a burial or funeral otherwise this burden will fall to the deceased's remaining family.

Finding The Best Over 65 Travel Insurance Deals

There are numerous companies that offer travel insurance for over 65's and I recommend comparing rates online before choosing the travel insurance policy you are going to purchase. While it may be more difficult to find policies for travel insurance over 65, do not lose hope the right one for you is out there! Comparison sites online are the best for finding travel insurance for over 65's because you can fill in all your details and then if you are not ready to purchase your travel insurance at that moment you can save the quotes or email them to yourself and return to it at a later date when you are ready. Cashback websites are another great tool when purchasing over 65 travel insurance. You never know which companies will offer money back for the purchase of a policy and no one wants to miss out on getting some money back! I always advise doing as much research as you can before purchasing travel insurance because you want to make sure you find the best policy to suit your needs, but you also may make some money back in the process.

It is vital that you take the time to read over any policy including the fine print to make sure that it fits your travel needs. While seniors will find that the premium on travel insurance for over 65 aka seniors citizens travel insurance will be a bit higher, it is always worth it to pay an extra bit of money for security and peace of mind when traveling. Once your travel insurance has been purchased you can forget about that and concentrate on enjoying your well deserved vacation!

Thanks for a very helpful Hub. If you have a medical condition this can make the insurance more expensive. If that is the case, try looking at websites for charities that deal with your condition - they often have a page that recommends certain insurance companies that will provide coverage at a reasonable price.
